Carrying Out the Great Commission

It's been two weeks since I went to Jamaica. I was just lazy to put words together to describe the marvelous week I had there, but here it is.

The breathtaking sunrise at the place we stayed- Youth With A Mission, YWAM (the base).

The first day was not that intense yet. A group of us stayed back at the base and did some weeding and raking. The other group started laying the foundation of the house that we built in 4 days.

Each day we will be grouped with different people and rotated to work/serve in different places. The place below is called Robin's Nest, a children (orphanage) home.
I helped this lady who has been working there for more than 10 years to slice some chicken. I never knew that there was a way to slice them efficiently. Guess I learned something new.
We did skits, played games, sang songs, and read bible stories to the kids.
The kids were crazy over our sunglasses and camera. They love Michael Jackson a lot so we played some of his songs and danced along with them. A kid asked me how he died. "He was sick" was all I told him.
In Jamaica, adopting a child is a pretty long process. The heartbreaking part is that some of these kids are not adoptable because they are private kids(think that's what they call it), meaning that their parents placed them there and take them back whenever they want.
The main reason we were there was to dig a trench for their water pipe. They have been getting uncleaned water and they just found a water source somewhere down the hill from the house.

Don't let the laughter deceive you, pick axing and shoveling rocks and soil are pretty intense job! But we did have fun talking and knowing each other more.

We did the same thing over at the elementary schools we went to, but of course without all the "muscle pumping workout."

After the strenuous work on laying the foundation was done, we hustled on with the cutting and painting the frames and walls.

The greatest thing that happened was the man of this house which we were building for accepted Christ after days of talking and ministering by one of our guys, Daniel. I could see Daniel's joy and passion when he talked to this guy. Soon after that, his eldest kid accepted Christ as well after two of our girls shared Christ's love with him. He said that when they(the girls) approached him and talked to him, his heart was beating fast. Before they pray the sinner's prayer, his heart was beating so fast, but after the prayer, his heart was calm and joy was just overflowing in him!

On the last work day, we were given the choice to choose where we wanna go. An orphanage home, another one with special needs children, and an old folks home. I went to the old folks home because I love listening to life stories especially from the elderly. Some of these folks have AIDS and parts of their limbs are gone. It was so inspiring to see them still loving Jesus and excited to sing songs with us while shaking around on their beds despite of their circumstances.

I heard that those who went to the orphanage house with special needs cried because of how hard the circumstances of the kids were. They took quite some time to get used to their deformities. Indeed it was a great experience for them to step out from their comfort zone.

Those who went to the old folks home decided to piece together a human orchestra performance for our Talent Show on the last day which was pretty kick-butt cool.

On one of the last days, my group met up with another group that went to another city, Port Maria. We shopped at one of the streets selling souvenirs, had lunch and headed over to Dunn's River Fall.
Of all the waterfalls that I've been in my entire life, this was the first time I actually climbed/hiked up a waterfall. It wasn't a tough one but did require quite good grips and balance. I was glad that I hiked up slowly while helping others up. That was when I got to know more people from the other group.

There were singing,

7 guys sharing the same toothbrush...
...with the last person drinking the entire mixture of toothpaste, foam, spit, saliva...I heard a few people including a guy threw up, totally made my day ;)
and the best was impersonation of all of our leaders which was incredibly funny and talented.

I'm glad that I went on this trip because of the great gifted people I met and the friendship that I formed with these people. I definitely became a great listener and talker after hearing all the life stories of these people.

In this trip, God was definitely speaking to each us, whether individually or throung others, and working in our lives as well as the lives of the Jamaicans. We had a couple of fast healing/miracles from hand injuries, swelling of foot, sprained knee, to falling off from the foundation of the house that was 9-foot tall. A lot of us, including me, received a lot of answers to the struggles that we faced in life through prayers, especially determining and choosing our future career. We were truly inspired to be great Christian leaders in Wesley Foundation (for me would be BCM).

One of the thing that I cherish and love the most from this trip was the prayer walk and the prayer together in the chapel. It was just incredible to pray, facing the city from the place where we prayed with worship songs that were entirely fitting to each of the items that we prayed about. I'm still keeping the nation in my prayers, especially the Jamaican men. They seem perverted in their thoughts and words. I pray that they will step up and be Godly men leading the nation toward salvation.

Welcome to the great city of Montego Bay, Jamaica, where Bob Marley is pretty much the "king" there.
Tourism would be the biggest source of income of Jamaica in general. There were tons of tourists around when we arrived. By we, I meant a few of us from the Wesley Foundation. 7 out of the 50 of us went first. Arriving 1 day earlier gave us a lil' bit more benefit and fun.
We got to try out some good local food at different places.

We collaborated our mission trip with Youth With A Mission(YWAM) and it's located on the hill. So the view was just so amazing and the street lights were marvelous at night. One of the leaders said that when he was there a few years ago, there were only a few street lights, but now it's covered with so many lights. Hopefully, Christianity is growing as such.

We went to a beach and pretty much got most of my tan there.

We had lunch over at this restaurant,Rick's Cafe, which was just right next to a cliff.

I know, I have pretty cool shades.

The highest cliff was around 35 feet high and it seemed pretty low from far.

Everyone took just a few seconds and embraced themselves and jumped. Me, on the other hand, took a few minutes and freaked out while my friends kept counted "1,2,3 jump!" Embarrassed? Definitely! But I'm glad I took that jump.
The few seconds of falling while feeling the force of gravity was just so weird. I landed partially on my butt and hurts like mad. I may never ever try that again but I would say it was one of my most glorious moment in life.

That night, everyone shared their life stories including the really hard times or family conflicts that we faced/are facing. It's just so touching and amazing how God works in each of us and our family. Though some of our families may be broken, we still love God so much. Now that is inspiring!

Composing song has been in my head for years now, but I've never really gave any deep thoughts about it. I guess I'm just lazy to find some quiet time, sit down and write songs. I would really love to write some Gospel as well as contemporary songs. Something that has been really inspiring to me is the chat and sharing I had with my friend, Kyle. He told me about this Christian artist (I forgot which band but they are pretty famous) writing songs about himself so that people will be able to experience what God's love really feels like.

This video is also pretty inspiring and it struck me on how often we takes things for granted.

God of This City

As the attacks on churches in Malaysia continues due to the dispute over the usage of the word "Allah" in Christianity, my heart aches for the attackers, the haters, and the innocent people as well. As Luke 23:34 puts it, "then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do" and this is exactly what I feel toward these people right now. This song comes to my mind whenever I think about this crisis.

Despite all these circumstances, I know that our Lord God will continue to keep watch over Malaysia and His faithful believer. I pray that Christians in Malaysia, especially those affected ones, will not grow to hate but to love them even more. I pray that Christians will grab hold of this time of crisis to share the gospel and spread God's love to those who are confused and weak, and even better, to those who are against them.

Passion Twenty Ten Awakening

To be frank, I wasn't very excited for Passion 2010 despite the fact of the excitement I had since I registered for it. Even though I know that there will be awesome speakers and bands during the entire conference, but i guess I was too tired after my New Orleans mission trip. Maybe it wasn't a good choice to have an event right after another. Despite all that, I still learned a lot of stuff.

The entire conference had more than 22,000 students and 11,000 volunteers from around the US and world! It was just so amazing getting to be part of this movement and worshiping together.

Even though everyone was psyched to meet Hillsong United at one of the late night concert, the band was very humble about their popularity. It was great that people were really focusing their heart and attention on God instead of the band.

Francis Chan, one of the speaker at the conference, is a pastor in California. I would say he's one of the most anointed and gifted speaker and servant of God. His book, Crazy Love, is really popular here as it talks about things that are convicting to us and the dire situation of Christians nowadays.

His message on Holy Suffering really struck me. He spoke about the life of Paul and his anguish for the lost and suffering for the sake of the gospel. Paul cared and loved the Gentiles so much that he desired to switch places with them just so that they would know Christ. As I think about it, will I be willing to sacrifice my salvation for thousands of unsaved people just so that they may know God and go to heaven while I replace them in hell?

Jeremy Cowart, the photographer for Passion World Tour which took place in 2009 compiled his photos from the 17 countries that Passion took place. I bought it because half of my face is in the Malaysia section. Pretty awesome huh?!

Despite my weariness from the lack of sleep, I still enjoyed this conference and never regretted attending it. I would say that I'm very much closer to God than before. I learned and am still learning to be anguish for Christ and accept every challenge as an opportunity to grow closer to God. I'm praying for all of you out there! yes, all of you!

The Saints Are Coming

My title is a song name by Skid and covered by U2 and Green Day during Hurricane Katrina. This song kept repeating itself during my entire mission trip in New Orleans.

I joined the college ministry of Prince Avenue Baptist Church on this mission trip right after Christmas. There were 8 of us and I was glad the group was small. This was the first mission trip of my life :)

As we arrived New Orleans, I could see vast empty lands. They were totally flat and seemed infinite beyond the horizon. I could even see the sun rising up from the horizon (my first time actually watching the sun rising slowly). The much rural area of New Orleans is pretty much undeveloped and houses are kinda small and old.

Basically, we repaired the house by mudding and painting the walls, repairing the windows and doors, and setting up the sheetrock. All of these were very new to me and they were all tough jobs.

In progress There are many times when I (and the rest as well) wanted to stop and just give up on the work that I was doing because it was just too tedious and tiring. But I kept thinking about the lady who stays at the house and how unfortunate she is. It's not entirely out of compassion that I joined this mission trip, but out of the desire to share God's love with others.

We all worked well together and had great moments with each other. I could see that God was working in us through the great fellowship we had with each other.

Even though we never got to meet the lady, we were still happy that we could help her and maybe touch her heart that God still loves her.

Since the alarm of the church turns on at a certain time, we had to be back by then and stayed inside. So our countdown to new year was pretty sad as we couldn't really see all the fireworks from the neighborhood.

Christmas Break

I spent my Christmas break over at two household in Marietta, Georgia. One was Auntie Joyce's house (we went to the same church back in Malaysia).

Piano recital Aside from spending time with her children, we went to the monthly gathering of MAG (Malaysian Association of Georgia). They had a Christmas lunch and gifts exchange. I never knew that there are so many Malaysians residing in Georgia.

After few days staying at her house, I went over to Grant's house as he invited me over to spend Christmas with his family. We are both in the same Quidditch team and go to BCM (Baptist Collegiate Ministry).
I didn't take much photos when I was at his house. This is the only photo I have from our Quidditch game.

They just got a new Border Collie puppy named Rebel the next day after I arrived. His mom drove all the way to Alabama just to pick it up from a farmer who was selling it. It has brought more joy to the household over Christmas :)

His mom asked me to suggest a Malaysian dish to her so she could cook it on Christmas. I chose curry chicken and looked up the recipe for her. I have to admit that it really tasted like a Malaysian curry chicken though she used another type of curry powder. The whole family liked it and she's amazed at the difference in cooking style for Asian food.

Grant took me for his "Christmas Twee" that he and his friends have on every 23 Dec night. They go around different places like hotels and fast food restaurants pretending to be deprived of Christmas spirit and ask for something that represents Christmas. It's amazing to see that there are really people deprived of the Christmas spirit. It was fun that we got a few ornaments and a huge wreath which some we took/stole from somewhere ;)
I also received a few random gifts fwhich were all great. The one below, Snap Cap amazes me. It's simple yet cool; one would think that it's dumb to buy this, but it's really awesome.

Well, Christmas ain't the same as the previous 19 years of Christmas I spent in Malaysia. People here decorate their house inside-out with all sorts of lights and interesting stuff. Gifts are very important even though they are not expensive or of great quality. Even so, I could still see some of these families emphasizing the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Anyway, I'll be going to New Orleans tomorrow for a mission trip with my Athens church members. We'll be basically build, repair and help out with buildings and other stuff. So, do pray for us that we get many opportunities to reach out to people as we help them.

The Quidditch Game

I've been playing Quidditch over the semester. No, we don't use brooms and neither do we fly. The entire concept is the same as the one in Harry Potter, except for the brooms and flying. The Quaffle is replaced with a frisbee, the Bludgers are replaced by two dodge-like balls and the Snitch is replaced by an actual person running around.

Those are the "rings" where players have to throw the frisbee through in order to score.
In short, it's mainly a combination of frisbee+dodgeball.
It gets dirty and a bit rough when the field is wet and muddy.

Well, it may sound lame and stupid at first, but it's a fun and tough game. In this semester's league, my team won 2nd place losing to Gryffindor. Fun stuff!

Turning Big Two

I just turned 20 years old on the 16th and that's not too old :) I had a final exam on that day so there wasn't much to be excited for, but few friends of mine celebrated it for me in my room right after my exam.

Any stuff you see below that may look like a toy for ages 10 and above were the presents they gave. Haha.

As I turned older, I've never really reflected on my past experiences, except on how I've been celebrating my past birthdays. I can see that I've grown physically (taller but not fatter okay) as well as spiritually. My walk with God has became closer since I studied in INTI and even closer after I came US. Life is always tough and may seem unfair at times, but without the love and faith in God, I would have never been through all the past events in my life. Anyway, I'm just blessed with such a wonderful yet interesting life and having a great family.

U of Georgia's mascot, Uga VII just died last week due to a heart-attack, which was really sad as he was only 4 years old and was in service as the mascot for only 1 year.

Homecoming Week- Take Me Down to the Classic City

Last week was our homecoming week (I realize that it's kinda weird to say "we" when I am the only author for this blog. Oh Well).

Basically it's a week filled with events to celebrate our school's history as well as welcoming back the alumni.

We had a parade at downtown Athens where different clubs and societies will decorate their cars into floats and just parade down the street. People were throwing candies to the big crowd (since we had a home football game). The exciting thing was even old people and parents of students were being hyped up for those candies. Interesting generation huh!I did not go to the carnival where they set up Ferris Wheel and few other rides because the line was just to long that my friends and I decided to goof around in Target.

Anyway, I was asked by my friends to sub in for one of our friend's place for the body paint up. They do this for every home game here. So, it's pretty wild. I'm "space" in front and "T" at the back

Looking hilarious yet scary to some, we attracted many people especially parents who forced their children to take photos with us.

"THANKS TROOPS" as it was our homecoming week where the alumni came to the game.

For each touchdown that we had, we will all do a number push-ups based on the total score. That would be a total of 7+14+21+28+31+38=139 push-ups that we did!

There was this alumni/old man, in his 80's, who got ~~intimidated~~ excited watching us doing it, so he took on the challenge. I will have to say that he's pretty awesome!

Btw, we won the game by 38-0. I feel so sorry for Tennessee Tech.

Relient K

Recently, I went to the Relienk K concert with my roommate which was really awesome and cool.

They decorated the stage in the theme of sailor, specifically, Giligian's Island.

The 2 opening indie bands:
Barcelona. They were good and seemed passionate in their music and performance.

Copeland. Their music sounded the same throughout all the songs they performed which made it kinda monotonous and boring.

Anyway, this video was the only video I recorded from the Blink 182 concert. All American Rejects and Fall Out Boys did not perform during that concert, which is seriously not cool and disappointing. However, Travis Barker made the concert whole lot better.

I Miss You

Loving the Homeless

This took place last Thursday. A couple of my friends from the Wesley Foundation small group and I gathered and headed out to Wendy's for the 99cent double cheeseburgers. Random fact, this was my first time riding in a jeep with no doors :) The shop was already closed and the drive-though was the only choice. We ordered 15 burgers and the guy over at the operator replied, "Are you guys serious?"

Fast forward, we prayed at a parking lot downtown and split into two groups. The first guy that we stumble upon, who was kinda old with wrinkled white hair asked if he could use one of our phone to call his friend. Although he couldn't get through to his friend, we gave him a burger after asking if he would want one. "Thank you. Have a great day," he replied.
Halfway walking down a street, we met a group of Christians giving out free water bottles and cookies while playing songs with their guitar. Pretty cool huh? We chatted a while and shared our ideas of reaching out to the homeless.
We passed a couple of people that looked "homeless" asking us to spare a few change. We declined but offered them burgers which they accepted.
There was this guy who was trying to tie a bulldog at a door of a building where he was playing guitar to earn a couple of bucks for the night. The dog seems to be his yet it seemed too clean and healthy to be owned by this homeless guy. We sat down with him and chatted for more than half and hour while we entertained his dog as well. He played some of his self-composed Christian songs and told us the background of each songs. Isn't it a wonder that a homeless guy like him, living under such an unpleasant surrounding and unstable life, would still love God and praise God with his Christian songs?

Bulldog'ness

UNITE- An event where all the college ministries gathered and had a time of worship and prayer together. It was awesome! I could see people being passionate for God.

Phi Slam party. Phi Slam is a so called "fraternity" not associated with the other fraternities in U of Georgia. Phi Slam is considered as a non-profit organization, i think. It's basically a group of Christian guys holding events like non-alcoholic parties on friday night so that people won't get drunk downtown. It sounded a bit weird to me at 1st but i guess they are fine since the party wasn't very wild.The huge dinosaur and monkey they put up. Wonder where they got all these cool stuff from.

The theme was "stuff up" which basically means dress up till you look fat or puffed :)

I'm grateful that I got a nice and good roommate who is funny and cool. He rides the unicycle cause his family deals with unicycle, banjos and other related instruments. Apparently, he holds an unicycle world champion title for one of the categories. On the ironic side, he has quite a huge collection of cow miniature figures at home.

The Dan Band mini-concert and it was free!

This band appeared in the movie, The Hangover.The band was funny with their dances, lyrics(though it was vulgar), expressions and trio which fitted perfectly among college students.

I've met quite a lot of people here and there from my dorm, parties, events and church. Guess I'm fitting quite well here and I'm excited for the upcoming football matches!

Although food here is fattening due to the large number of fast food chains and grill/bar restaurants around here, I'm taking swimming as my Physical Ed. hoping I could stay fit ;) Gonna tryout a lot of sports here and continue working out at the gym which is AWESOME!

Anyway, this is something random- I saw an elementary school kid playing basketball and decided to shoot some hoops with him and wow, he could shoot as good as me and I think he's gonna be one heck of a basketballer in just a matter of time.

I've been looking for a decent guitar that falls within my budget which is around 700USD but couldn't really find the few brands that I want here in Athens. Hope I'll find one soon and continue to rock on ;) Speaking of music, churches here sing a lot of songs by David Crowder Band(which I like!), Hillsong and other American Christian artists. And tryouts for guitar in a few college ministries went well but I'll need to choose one to commit myself to. Anyway, the music scene here seems awesome since they have local bands performing at bars almost every night.

As for my classes, I get to go to the plantation fields that my university owns for most of Crop and Soil lab ;) One of my classmates is as old as my professor which is around 60-70 years old. Another guy in my English class has 5 kids and he looks like he's only 30 years old.
Haven't been taken a lot of photos yet, so I guess I won't be posting much photos as I used to anymore.

All The Way From Athens

So, this is what you guys have been waiting for, well, for some of you. For those who don't know anything yet, I'm in University of Georgia now studying Applied Biotechnology :) So, it took me almost two days(including the transits) to reach Athens, Georgia.

Singapore Airport. Apparently they have this entertainment section with good sofas where you could listen to music, play LAN games and even X-box! They even have a small cinema. I'm from the jungle okay...

Chicago Airport. It took me 2 and a half hours to pass the security check and clearance cause there were just too many international visitors/students lining up at the counter.

University of Georgia football stadium. The people here are kinda crazy over the college football team-Bulldogs.

Most shops here are decorated with the football team's initials and merchandise. I saw one Chevrolet store decorated with the Bulldogs cheer.

One of the guys who fetched me from Atlanta airport told me that they have their own real bulldog with it's own house and treated like a prince/king @.@

Food here is basically just fast food and a a variety of different cuisines. But you can't get much healthy food here. Oh NOOOOOOOOOOOOO... The burgers here are so nice by the way. Hehe

Final Days In Kuching

Here are couple of places that I hung out with my friends before flying to US. I had only less than 5 days in Kuching. I had quite a great time though.

We went to this place called 175 Degrees if not mistaken for a free fish spa as long as drinks or food are ordered. It was fun and we just kept laughing for no reason!

For those Chinese readers, notice anything funny?

Everyone of us agreed on a generalization we made up for Malacca people- they like to line up. Every shop we go, people are lining up and it takes more than an hour to reach their turn plus the queue will always be right at the side of the road where cars would just zoom by.

'Someone save them~'This rice ball chicken rice was worth lining up for. I didn't go to this shop when i was in Malacca last year. This, for sure is better than the one I went last year.

If only I had my dslr with me, this shot could have been made perfect. Oh yea, I borrowed Jason's camera for this trip because my parents want to use my dslr for my sis' graduation. I miss my dslr~

Half A Day At The Airport

I was in airport yesterday since late afternoon, waiting for my sis to take her stuff she left with me. My sis and Manami, her Japanese housemate, was suppose to fly to Kuching for 2 days before they head off to UK but, the monorail failed them when they were on their way to KL Sentral before heading to the airport. So, they missed their flight. It was a good thing I brought my laptop to the airport so they ended up using it to search for a~~shelter~~ hotel for the night while I accompanied them and refilling my Burger King drink for them.
After they left, I reunited with my Inti friends in sending off Eric and Alvin. Nothing much about that. Just bit of fun with the trolley and a lot of photo taking :)
I'm off to Malacca this evening while my entire family will be off to UK for my oldest sis' graduation. Sigh~
